TL;DR

Sales AI for cold-call practice (think Tough Tongue AI) is vertical software, not a chatbot trick. Capital is already voting that way: about $3B into vertical AI from January through early July 2026. The moat is workflow, scoring, and call data, not the model brand underneath.

Cold calling got harder, not obsolete. Buyers ignore more. Reps still freeze on the second objection. A generic model can write you a script in ten seconds. It will not make a new SDR sound ready on a live dial.

That gap is where Sales AI training sits. Products like Tough Tongue AI put reps into voice and video roleplay with AI buyers that push back, then score the session and (in some setups) help on real calls. Practice before the call. Feedback after. Sometimes live assist in the middle. Feels closer to a sparring partner than a prompt box.

Call that vertical AI. The frontier model can swap next quarter. What sticks is the sales loop: ICP personas, rubrics managers trust, session memory, phone/Meet deployment, and coaching cadence. Horizontal labs are great generalists. They rarely own Monday morning for an SDR team.

Money is following that thesis. Public trackers of pure-play vertical AI equity (rounds of $300K+) show about $2.99B across 82 deals from January through early July 2026, versus about $2.39B across 23 deals in the same stretch of 2025. More companies getting funded, not just a few mega-checks. You also see large vertical rounds in adjacent categories, like Assort Health’s $120M Series C in healthcare AI and Taktile’s $110M Series C in fintech decisioning. Sales enablement and cold-call training sit in the same story: buyers pay for workflow change, and investors pay up when usage looks recurring.

Can a bigger AI player crush this? Only if the product is a thin wrapper. A free voice mode from a frontier lab does not replace scenario libraries, talk-track scoring, or anonymized call corpora tuned to your ICP. Defensibility lives in workflow lock-in, domain evals, proprietary practice data, and distribution into enablement budgets. Prove connect rates and meeting set rates, or you are just renting someone else’s model.

My View on This

Buy the training system, not the model hype. Pick one painful motion (new SDR ramp or enterprise objections), run AI roleplay for a quarter, and keep the vendor that stays useful when the underlying model rotates. Vertical AI that changes how reps talk will keep getting capital. Script generators will not.
